Exercise 1

Goal: This activity is designed to help students focus on the positive aspects of business in the U.S. and think about how they can create a positive climate through effective communication.

Instructions: Your task is to think of a person or company who has recently helped you out in a situation, such as a customer service representative. Read the suggestions at the following website <www.writeexpress.com/compli02.html> for giving praise to employees and then draft a letter that you could send to this company regarding the incident. What type of impact do you think your letter will have? Do you think such letters can help shape the nature of relationships between companies and customers?

Exercise 2

Goal: This activity is designed to help students think more broadly about the application of materials like conflict management and relationship climate into policies that can benefit employees and clients.

Instructions: Your task is to create a violence prevention program for your current or future employer. Violence in the workplace has a lot to do with a negative communication climate and poor managed conflicts. In order to help you out with this task, you can see an example of a violence prevention program at the following website <http://nsi.org/Library/Work/violenc1.html>. Be prepared to discuss what your decisions are based on and how well such a program might work.
