Consider This 10.1

You know a couple of things about the health agency’s executive committee. The committee was composed of registered nurses who were all department heads at the agency. In addition, they were struggling with an accreditation application that involves a self-study. They all believed their task to be an important step for the agency. It didn’t seem as if there should have been a problem. What do you think their underlying problems might have been?

Consider This 10.2

Think of a problem you have dealt with in a group. Pretend that it is your responsibility to deliver the opening remarks for initiating a discussion of the problem. Write the introduction you would use.

Consider This 10.3

Stop and do not read further yet. Think back to the group discussions you have been involved in. What were the most significant problems in these discussions? What were the best qualities of these discussions? Now, read on and see if the following suggestions touch what you believe to be the best and worst aspects of group discussions.

Consider This 10.4

You have tried to create a group culture that promotes distributed leadership. However, one member consistently refuses to carry out his responsibilities; he always has a reason why something is not done. You very much want to create a group culture in which all members can consider the consequences of their own actions. You have even, purposely, not done the work for this member to show what happens when work is not completed on time. The problem is that you face a deadline and the project report must be turned in soon. What do you do? When is enough, enough? Where do you draw the line?
