The purpose of the digestive system is to provide nutrients to the body. This is accomplished by taking in food, breaking it down, and absorbing the digested molecules. The organs responsible for this process are the mouth, teeth, salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and large intestine. An additional function of this system is to eliminate the waste products of digestion. A healthy digestive system is important for the health of all other body systems. Understanding this system is essential when assisting with procedures such as endoscopic exams and when teaching a patient about diet and nutrition.
