Case Studies
(See related pages)

In all the chapters the Case Studies represent situations similar to those that the medical assistant may encounter in daily practice. Students are encouraged to consider the case study as they read each chapter.

While on vacation, a 28-year-old male had a mountain biking accident that resulted in a broken leg and other injuries. He went to the local emergency room for treatment and was instructed to follow up with his primary care physician on arriving home. Three days after the accident, he presents in your office with crutches and a cast on his left leg. Using the crutches, he stumbles and almost falls as you ask him back to the examination area. You also notice a dry, crusted, bloody injury on his left forearm.

As you read this chapter, consider the following questions:

1. What type of teaching do you think this patient will need?

2. What type of therapy may be necessary for the crusted bloody injury on his forearm, and how would you perform it?
