2. The website for Random House Webster's College Dictionary outlines a system for determining the "offensiveness quotient" for words (http://www.randomhouse.com/words/language). Terms are ranked based on the initiator (does the person who uses the word intend to be hurtful?) and the interpreter (is the person being described offended?). For instance, using "guy" to refer to a woman is rarely taken as offensive, whereas using "baby" is likely to offend her. Check the list to see if you might be using terms that offend others, even if that is not your intent.
