See if you can find examples in your library of the same psalm text (Psalm 1, for example) in the Ainsworth Psalter, the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter, and the Bay Psalm Book. How do the translations differ? How would you characterize the language and tone of each?

Read a sampling of William Billings' writing from his preface to The Singing Master's Assistant (1778). What kind of singing did he prefer? What does his prose tell you about the character of the man?

Metrical psalmody is based on the idea that text and tune may be interchangeable. Become part of this tradition by taking a familiar melody (a folk song or children's rhyme is best) and adding your own lyrics.
