attachment  Close emotional bond between that develops between an infant and his/her caregiver
goodness of fit  Match between a child's temperament and the environmental demands placed on the child
reciprocal socialization  Socialization that is bidirectional; children socialize parents, just as parents socialize children
reflexive smile  A smile that does not occur in response to external stimuli; typically appears during the first month after birth
separation protest  Infant's distressed reaction, such as crying, when the caregiver leaves
social referencing  Reading emotional cues in others to help determine how to act in a particular situation. Most often seen in emotionally ambiguous situations
social smile  A smile in response to an external stimulus, which, early in development, is typically a face
Strange Situation  Observational measure of infant attachment that requires the infant to move through a series of introductions, separations, and reunions with the caregiver and an adult stranger in a prescribed order
stranger anxiety  A frequent expression of fear in infants in response to fear and wariness of strangers
temperament  An individual's behavioral style and characteristic way of emotionally responding
