DRAWING FEATURES OF GREEK ARCHITECTURE

Complete a detail drawing in pencil of a section of a building in your community that exhibits features of Greek architecture. Fill the entire sheet of paper. Make your drawing entirely of firm, clear lines that define a variety of large and small shapes. Try to communicate the unified, dignified appearance associated with such Greek buildings as the Parthenon.

INSPIRATION

Review the features of the Greek orders illustrated and discussed on page 000. Examine pictures of Greek buildings in this and other books available in your school or community. With other members of your class, discuss the different features and details observed on these buildings.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Pencils
  • Sketch paper
  • Sheet of white drawing paper, 12 × 18 inches or larger

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  1. Search your community for buildings that exhibit some of the architectural features found on Greek structures. Complete sketches of the parts of those buildings that best demonstrate these features. Bring your sketches to class, display them, and discuss the Greek influences demonstrated in each.
  2. Select your best sketch and reproduce it as a precise line drawing on the sheet of drawing paper. Add as many details as possible to make the Greek architectural features easy to identify. Fill the entire sheet with your drawing, using a variety of large and small shapes.

EVALUATING YOUR WORK

Describe Does your drawing clearly illustrate the different features of Greek architecture found on buildings in your community? Name the features. Can other students in class identify these features?

Analyze Did you fill the entire picture surface with your drawing? Explain how the firm, clear lines in the drawing define a variety of large and small shapes.

Interpret Does your drawing communicate the same dignified look observed in Greek buildings? Do the details illustrated in your drawing bear a resemblance to details noted in a particular Greek building? If so, which building is it?

Judge Explain how your drawing achieves an overall sense of unity. If you were to do it again, how would you improve on this unity?
