Preface
Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003: A Professional Approach, Comprehensive Student Edition is written to help you master Microsoft Office PowerPoint for Windows. The text takes you step-by-step through the features that you’re likely to use in both your personal and business life.
Case Study
Learning the features of PowerPoint is one component of the text, and applying what you learn is another. That is why a Case Study was created and appears throughout the text. The Case Study offers the opportunity to learn Word in a realistic business context. Take the time to read the Case Study near the front of this book. The Case Study is about Good 4U restaurant, a fictional business located in New York City, New York. All the documents for this course involve the Good 4U restaurant.
Organization of the Text
The text includes six units. Each unit is divided into lessons, and there are 15 lessons, each building on previously learned procedures. This building block approach, together with the Case Study and the following features, enables you to maximize the learning process.
Includes an Appendix of Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
standards, a Glossary, and an Index.
Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Program
The Microsoft Office Specialist certification program offers PowerPoint certification
at the “Specialist” level. This certification can be a valuable asset in any job
search. For more information about this Microsoft program, go to www.microsoft.com/officespecialist . For a complete listing of the skills for the PowerPoint 2003 “Specialist” certification exam (and a correlation to the lessons in the text), see the appendix, “Microsoft Office Specialist Certification.”

Conventions Used in the Text
This text uses a number of conventions to help you learn the program and save
your work.
Options that you choose from menus and dialog boxes appear in a font that is similar to the on-screen font; for example, “Choose Print from the File menu.” (The underline means you can press Alt and key the letter to choose the option.)
You are asked to save each document with your initials followed by the
exercise name. For example, an exercise might end with this instruction: “Save the document as [your initials]5-12.Documents are saved in folders for each lesson.
If You Are Unfamiliar with Windows
If you are unfamiliar with Windows, review the “Windows Tutorial” available on the Professional ApproachWeb site at www.mhteched.com/pas before beginning Lesson 1. This tutorial provides a basic overview of the operating system and shows you how to use the mouse. You might also want to review “File Management” (also on the Professional ApproachWeb site) to get more comfortable with files and folders.
Screen Differences
As you practice each concept, illustrations of the screens help you follow the instructions.
Don’t worry if your screen is slightly different from the illustration. These differences are due to variations in system and computer configurations.
