Internet Exercises

  1. To explore current women's issues in the United States, go to the Website of the journal Gender and Society. (http://www.trinity.edu/mkearl/gender.html) Read the material on your screen, clicking on anything that interests you. You will find this site to be a rich source of information. Scroll down to the section heading "Institutional Analyses" and under the subheading "Family," click on "To Work or Not Work?" This will provide access to an article entitled "Homemakers Get Plenty of Support," which was written by Kirstin Downey Grimsley and R.H. Melton for the Washington Post. Read this article.
    1. Evaluate the article. What are the major points made?
    2. If you were a working mother, would you have reservations about day care and its effects? Explain.
  2. For a look at the male side of the gender equality issue--since half the population is still male--visit the American Men's Studies Association Website. (http://www.mensstudies.org) Select "About AMSA - Its History, Mission, and By-laws" and read through the material.
    1. How old an organization is it?
    2. What is its mission?
    3. Do you think the AMSA serves a useful purpose?
    4. Do you think men need to redefine their gender roles in an organized manner based on men's studies?
