Chapter 10 Exercises- How many newsgroups are there now? How many mailing lists
are there now? (section 10.2, problem 1)
- Determine as many of the following items as possible. List your sources.
- How many users read newsgroups?
- How many new messages are generated and sent to news-groups each day?
- How many bytes of news are generated each day?
(section 10.2, problem 6) - Contrast and compare email and newsgroups. (section 10.3, problem 11)
- What is one of your hobbies? Is there a newsgroup relating to it? If so, what is the name of the newsgroup? Are you subscribed
to it? If not, subscribe to it and report the number of posts in one week’s time. How many different threads got started during a one-week interval? (section 10.3, problem 12)
- Find a mailing list for which the subject is one of your hobbies.
What is the name of the list? What is the name of the list server
used to manage the list (or is it managed by a person)? Where
is the list kept? (section 10.4, problem 18)
- Subscribe to a mailing list of your choice. What is its name?
For one week, record the number of messages the mailing list
receives daily. In this brief period, did a small group of users
dominate the postings, or were there many different users involved
in the discussions? (section 10.4, problem 19)
- Present three more differences between mailing lists and newsgroups that were not described in the text. (section 10.4, problem 23)
- Give the URLs for three directory services that are useful for
locating mailing lists or newsgroups. Compare their capabilities in a table you create in HTML. Compare their results when you tried to locate the phrase “Appalachian Trail.” (section 10.5, problem 25)
- Provide the URLs of three on-line universities. How many
courses does each offer, what is the duration of each course, and what is the tuition? Are the courses all computer related, or are other subjects offered as well? (section 10.6, problem 31)
- Locate three USENET newsgroups associated with MUDs and
select one to read. Summarize the contents of the postings you
read. Provide the names and subscription addresses of three mailing lists that discuss MUDs. (section 10.7, problem 33)
