Chapter 3 - The Internet

Chapter 3 Learning Objectives

Even though you may have been using the Internet for a while, you may not know very much about how it works, its culture and history, and some of its uses. The goals of this chapter are therefore to:

Present a “definition” of the Internet and a variety of interesting facts about it.

Discuss the history of the Internet (in the form of a timeline classifying some of the important events in the development of the Internet).

Provide an intuitive idea of how the Internet works.

Discuss Internet congestion and what, if anything, can be done to address it.

Teach you about the Internet’s rich culture.

Talk about the importance of business in the Internet setting.

Define some of the issues pertaining to collaborative computing and its relationship to the Internet.
