Essay Quiz
1
Before her wedding, your favorite cousin comes to you to ask what she can expect from married life. In fact, she almost thinks that you can gaze into a crystal ball of some sort and predict her future. She wants to know how she can make her marriage a warm and loving one that will last “so long as we both shall live,” to paraphrase her anticipated wedding vows, and wants to be sure that she will be a good mother and, ultimately, a caring grandmother. What can you tell her?
2
Your neighbor confides in you that her husband has been repeatedly unfaithful and she has recently learned that he is having unprotected sex with multiple partners. His behavior has been “erratic” in that she never knows if or when he’ll be home, he does not participate in the children’s school and extracurricular activities, and the two of them spend most of their time together either arguing or in icy silence. She has suggested they see a marriage counselor, but he says he is perfectly happy with the way things are. She tells you she is considering leaving him and asks you what the effect might be on her children if she divorces him. She has heard that even in the worst of relationships, it is better for the couple to stay together “for the sake of the children.” Short of giving her legal advice (other than “see an attorney to learn what you can do and what your rights are”), what can you tell her about the effects of divorce on children and how she can minimize the trauma to her children in the event of a divorce?
