Set the display to lock on azimuth and altitude. Scroll to
azimuth 270°, altitude 20°. Set the geographical location
to anywhere in the continental United States. Set the date
for March 21 (approximately the vernal equinox) and then
set the time to sunset. Find and record the azimuth of the
Sun. Repeat for June 21, September 21, and December
21. Calculate the difference between the most northerly
and most southerly sunset directions. Set the geographical
location to UK: Edinburgh. Repeat the steps you did for
the location in the continental United States. Compare
the differences in sunset azimuth for the two locations.
How do you think the difference would change if you
went north to the arctic circle or south to the horizon?
What impact do these changes have on the severity of the
seasons at different latitudes?
