How Do I Develop and Use Benchmark Lessons?

ANALYZING YOUR QUESTIONING STYLE

Materials Needed:

  • A video camera
  • A video
  • A prepared lesson

Prepare a short benchmark lesson, no more than ten or fifteen minutes long, on a topic of your choice. Teach it to a small group of your peers. Make a video of yourself teaching.

Watch yourself on video and analyze your lesson:
  1. What was the average number of questions you asked per minute?
  2. What percentage of your questions were lower level? Medium level? Higher level? Procedural (just part of organizing the lesson)?
3

After analyzing your lesson, list in your portfolio ways that you could improve your questioning strategies. What are you doing well?
