How Do I Develop and Use Benchmark Lessons?

LEADING A DISCUSSION

Materials Needed:

  • Paper and pencil or a computer
  • A video camera

Prepare a short discussion, no more than ten or fifteen minutes long, on a topic of your choice. Situate the discussion in a project. What is the driving question of the project?

Lead the discussion with a small group of your peers. Make sure to create a video of the session.

Watch yourself on videotape and analyze the discussion. Use the categories in Table 7.2 to track your verbal -behavior:
  1. What was the average number of questions you asked per minute?
  2. What kind of questions did you ask?
  3. What is your pattern of asking questions?
  4. Did you use wait-time, probing, and redirecting?

How would you like to change your questioning? What other issues might come up in a science class? Record your ideas in your portfolio.
