Class Size and Student Achievement
(See related pages)

Few issues have created the controversy that has been associated with smaller class sizes. A battle, of sorts, has been occurring between conservative critics of education and those within the education establishment about how and whether class size makes a difference.

The authors highlight some of the research on pages 344-347. The review they provide is a "picture" of much of what researchers are asserting about class size. Reread those pages and then assume that you are appointed to a task force in your school district to determine whether your local school board should actively seek to make classes smaller. The class sizes in the district are now at or near the national averages, but the board wants even higher student achievement. Should you support or oppose the smaller classes? What findings would you use to support your argument?
