Go to your local library and look at books for a particular age group. Randomly select books from the shelves. Fill in the following chart about the books you looked at, then calculate the scores described on the next page. Complete the activity according to the guidelines given in Student Activity #16–1.

Calculate female/male character ratio by (1) adding the number of females, (2) adding the number of males, (3) dividing the total found in (1) by the total found in (2). If the number is less than 1, there are more male characters overall than female characters; if the number is greater than one, there are more female characters overall.

Calculate female/male picture ratio by (1) adding the numbers of females, (2) adding the number of males, (3) dividing the total found in (1) by the total found in (2). Calculate female traditional/nontraditional ratio by (1) adding the number of traditional female roles, (2) adding the number of nontraditional female roles (3) dividing the total found in (1) by the total found in (2).
