From Point to Point: The Proportional Symbol Map

Lab Manual/Exercise Worksheets

Lab Manual/Exercise Worksheets prepared by Christopher J. Sutton, Western Illinois University

Graduated Symbol Mapping. While the terms "proportional point symbol map" and "graduated point symbol map" are often used interchangeably, these two terms have specific meaning in ArcMap. In the software, proportional symbol maps use absolute scaling or apparent magnitude scaling and graduated symbol maps use range grading. In this exercise students use range grading to map the intensity of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Emily, two hurricanes that reached Saffir-Simpson Scale Category 5 in 2005. Skills covered in this exercise include: creating a shapefile from a table containing Latitude and Longitude coordinates, using the Definition Query to limit the records being displayed, manually adjusting class upper limits, redundant coding, and adding a graticule.

Proportional Symbol Mapping. In this exercise, students employ both absolute scaling and apparent magnitude scaling to map data for the state of Texas. Skills covered in the exercise include: adjusting the minimum symbol size for symbol scaling, adjusting symbol properties, viewing descriptive statistics for a field, changing the background properties of the proportional symbol map layer, using Flannery compensation, and specifying the number of symbols to display in the legend.
