There are three key theories of social change: evolutionary, functionalist, and conflict. According to evolutionary theorists, with social change societies become more and more complex. For functionalists, societies must maintain a state of balance, so when change occurs in one part of society, it must be balanced by change in another part of society. For conflict theorists, social change is a way for societies to correct social inequalities and injustices.
