Contexts, a sociology journal published by the American Sociological Association, aims to introduce the general public to sociological research. Articles in Contexts are written in an accessible and interesting style, and can give you a feel for the range of research that sociologists typically engage in. Visit the Contexts website at www.contextsmagazine.org/, and click on the link to the current issue. Look at the short abstracts of the articles in the current issue, and answer the following questions.
  1. What do these abstracts tell you about the scope of sociological research? Are sociologists interested in non-U.S. societies, for example, as well as American society?
  2. For the most part, are these topics consistent or inconsistent with your assumptions about sociological work before taking this class? In what ways?
Link to the article that is available in full text, and read it.
  1. How does the author appear to have gathered the information in the article?
  2. Are there photographs, tables, or figures? How do they enhance your understanding of the article?
  3. Does the article spark an interest in sociological research for you? Could you see yourself reading some of the recommended sources, or, perhaps, conducting this kind of research yourself some day?
