Wilbur Catton, 77, 1525 Brattle Ave., died 25 years ago, left $50,000 in his will to four daughters and one stepdaughter: Sylvia, $10,000; Beth, $10,000; Charleyne, $15,000; Zelda, $10,000; Marianne, the stepdaughter, $5.000. The stepdaughter had disappeared before his death.
An officer and friend at the First National Bank calls to say that the stepdaughter, now Marianne Catton of Freeport, has been located and the full amount will be turned over to her soon. He thinks it will make a good story.
You ask the banker what Marianne will receive, and he laughingly tells you to figure it out yourself and call back so he can check your arithmetic. You do compound interest based on the 5 percent interest rate your source told you to use. When you have the figure, you call him back and he congratulates you on your mathematical ability.
