The NCAA makes available the graduation rates of athletes by race and academic data for student athletes. The material is available at www.ncaa.org. Graduation data is listed for schools in Divisions I, II and III. A recent report showed that Duke University, a perennial basketball powerhouse, graduated all its black players within six years. At Florida State University, a football power, 38 percent of the black players graduated within the six-year span. Academic data includes average SAT scores for men's and women's sports and the grade point averages of the athletes in various sports. At the University of Florida, for example, in a recent year the men's football team had an SAT average of 883 and the cross country track team averaged 1,077. The football team's GPA was 2.64, the women's track team 3.12. |
