You are the police reporter for the Freeport News and have been told that the police have arrested a murder suspect, Hosie Gene Jones, 60, 1347 Oklahoma Ave., a handyman and ex-convict who is known to be a drug addict. You obtain the background of the slaying, and along the way manage to obtain the criminal record (rap sheet) of the suspect.

Your editor tells you he wants about 400 words, and if you can put the man's record in the story, to do so. He says he has recently heard that it may not be legal in the state to use anything but convictions, and he asks you to check. It is supposed to be prejudicial to the suspect, he says.

Write the story, but be sure to determine whether you can use parts of the suspect's record.

Here is the background provided by police:

Jones is accused of stabbing to death a 24-year-old advertising copywriter. The young woman, Dorothy F. Roberts, was in the habit of returning to her apartment at 242 Madison St. to take lunch with a friend. She worked for Trimbel Department Store.

Yesterday when Miss Roberts entered the hallway of her four-story building, she was accosted by Jones, who demanded her purse. She resisted.

He is charged with stabbing her in the chest and back with a knife and stealing her purse containing $7.

When he was captured several blocks away, police found a sales slip addressed to Miss Roberts rolled between the $7 and tucked into Jones' pocket. He quietly surrendered.

Jones' criminal record runs to three sheets. He has had two aliases, Sonny Boy and Tom Stacey. The record contains 22 arrests beginning in 1960 with a conviction for burglary. He was sent to jail or prison 16 times. Here are some of the crimes for which he was convicted and the disposition of the cases:
