Studies indicate that many college students are not practicing safe sex. Dr. Karen Kotloff, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, sampled 2,013 undergraduates and found:

• 48.5 percent of heterosexual partners used condoms while having intercourse.
• 36.8 percent of gay students always or almost always used condoms; 28.2 percent said they never used condoms.
