Speeches, Meetings and New Conferences

Introduction

The reporter's task in covering events based on the spoken word is to select from the welter of words those that best summarize the heart of the event. These key quotes are usually paraphrased in the lead and then directly quoted high in the story.
The story will consist mostly of quotations of the speaker(s). For meetings, panel discussions and symposia, the story theme usually is the consensus reached, although sharp disagreement can form the lead, too. Audience reaction, if significant, should be part of the story. Location and sponsor are secondary.
