The Police Beat

Introduction

Stories of crime, detection and arrest are avidly read. Most of these stories are culled from the reports and records kept by the police department which the reporter checks on his or her rounds. Names and addresses are always double-checked for accuracy. Given time, the reporter will follow up some of these reports with interviews of the victims and, when possible, of the investigating and arresting officers. These interviews provide the human interest details lacking in the reports. Police reporters also write general stories, such as the effectiveness of the police department in crime prevention and in solving crime.
