Puff

     A store has an anniversary sale. A car dealership has been sold. A clothing store adds a new line of merchandise. Where is the line between free advertising and legitimate news? Draw some guidelines and apply them to the following summaries of news releases from local sources:

  1. Jack A. Serge, manager of the Kmart Eastview store, today announced the opening of an expanded apparel section.
  2. The Metropolitan Transit Authority today contracted to buy 25 specially designed buses from General Motors at a cost of $5 million.
  3. The XYZ Repair Shop has opened in a new shopping center outside town and is having a lottery to give away a laptop computer tomorrow.
  4. Wayne Miller, an employee of the Amidon Photo Exchange, is retiring after 35 years with the store.
  5. Stacy Backman is being honored by the Allstate Insurance office in town for 25 years' service. She will be given a diamond pin at a dinner Friday night.
  6. Robert Salmi, cashier at the First National Bank, has been promoted to assistant vice president in charge of credit.
  7. Freeport Auto Repair announces new ownership. The business, located at 1273 Santa Fe St., has been purchased by the Morgantown Repairmen, a national car repair organization that has 15 other car repair shops in the state. The new owners plan to enlarge the shop and have purchased adjoining lots on each side of the current shop. The firm will have a work force of 19 mechanics when the new shop is built. Currently, 10 mechanics work for the auto repair shop.
  8. The Gap Clothiers of Freeport announces its Fall sale. All clothing must be off the shelves by the end of the month. Reductions range from 25 to 75 percent on men's and women's clothing. Shoes are all 50 percent off. The specials include 50 percent off on women's sweaters, including a line of cashmere sweaters that normally sell for $250. Also included in the 50 percent reduction are men's jackets and wool sweaters.

     During the week-long sale that starts today, the store will remain open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
     All major credit cards are accepted, but an additional 10 percent deduction will be given for cash purchases. All purchases are final. There will be no returns accepted.
