Story Structure

Introduction

The news story moves logically and smoothly from the lead through the body of the story to the ending. Each part of this structure serves a distinct purpose:

  • Lead: Gives the reader the crux of the story. It is written to invite the reader into the story.
  • Body: Amplifies the lead with supporting documentation; includes secondary material.
  • Ending: Carries the least important material. For features, it may provide the punch line or kicker and sometimes is used to summarize the material in the story.
