Chapter One begins with a discussion of different definitions of art and the different activities of the artist, art historian, art critic, and aesthetician. It then proceeds to the work of art and its components of form, subject, and content, and their relationship to context. An explanation of the major art appreciation approaches of formalism and contextualism follows and the chapter concludes with in-depth formalist and contextualist responses to Vincent van Gogh's Night Café painting.
