Chapter Overview

Life science is loosely divided into the study of plants and the study of animals. Studies of living organisms have been going on for several thousand years. However, it is only within the last two centuries and mainly within the last 50 years that we have arrived at our present understanding of the biological and chemical processes that support life on Earth.

In this chapter you will learn about plant and animal science as you study the following topics:

  • characteristics of living things
  • the cell
  • heredity
  • characteristics of simple organisms
  • characteristics of flowering plants
  • characteristics of animals
  • animal behavior
  • communities of living things
  • the theory of evolution
  • the fossil record
