Stars have a life cycle. They are born, grow to become red giants, then mature to become a white dwarf. Finally, stars fade and become black dwarfs.

Which statement illustrates the main difference between a star’s life cycle and the life cycle of a plant?
Need a Hint?
A)A plant’s life cycle does not take as long to complete.
B)Part of a plant’s life cycle includes the ability to create another living thing.
C)A plant’s life cycle depends on using a source of energy.
D)Plants are made of basic units called cells; stars are made of basic units called atoms.
E)Plants cannot live on or near stars because the temperature is much too high.
2

You place a few drops of blue food coloring in a glass of water. Then you place a white carnation in the glass. A few minutes later the carnation flower is blue.

What structure allows the blue coloring to enter the cell?
Need a Hint?
A)chloroplast
B)cytoplasm
C)cell membrane
D)chromatin
E)nucleus
3

Observing cells through a microscope, you identify cytoplasm, nucleus, cell membrane, and organelles. What else must you observe before you can conclude the cell is a plant cell?
Need a Hint?
A)chromatin
B)vacuoles
C)nucleolus
D)mitochondria
E)cell wall
4

A scientist declares that animals cannot live without plants but plants can live without animals. Which of the following beliefs and explanations is correct?
Need a Hint?
A)The scientist's statement is true because plants can produce their own food.
B)The scientist's statement is true because animals would not have any shelter without plants.
C)The scientist's statement is false because animals can survive by eating other animals.
D)The scientist's statement is false because animals can use amino acids to make proteins. They use the proteins for growth and repair.
E)The scientist's statement is true because animal cells do not have organelles to carry out chemical reactions.

Question 5 refers to the following illustration.

Which of the following is the BEST description for anaphase?
Need a Hint?
A)Chromatin and the cell nucleus are contained within the cell membrane.
B)The nuclear membrane disappears. Two sets of chromosomes have formed.
C)Chromosomes line up forming a spindle fiber, forming the center of the nucleus.
D)Chromosomes separate and move apart on spindle fibers.
E)Two nuclei and nuclear membranes form. Cell divides and two daughter cells form.

In a study of pea plants, pea seeds may be yellow (dominant) or green (recessive).

If one parent has one yellow gene and one green gene and the second parent has two green genes, which statement BEST describes the possible outcomes?
Need a Hint?
A)All offspring will be green.
B)All offspring will be yellow because yellow is dominant.
C)Offspring have an equal chance of being yellow or green.
D)The ratio of yellow offspring to green offspring will be 1 to 4.
E)The ratio of green offspring to yellow offspring will be 1 to 4.
7

Which statement below is true for both fungi and ferns?
Need a Hint?
A)They are both simple nonvascular plants.
B)Both are eukaryotes, rooted in one place, and reproduce using spores.
C)Both absorb nutrients directly through their cell walls.
D)Both are prokaryotes and reproduce using spores.
E)Both use photosynthesis to make their own food.
8

A group of researchers is trying to classify an adult vertebrate animal. If they are to classify the animal correctly, which of the following characteristics will NOT be helpful?
Need a Hint?
A)whether the animal has a placenta
B)whether the animal has feathers
C)how old the animal grows to be
D)whether the animal is warm-blooded
E)whether the animal has gills

Question 9 refers to the following information.

The following are types of inborn behaviors:

  1. reflex—an automatic response to a stimulus
  2. instinct—a complex, unlearned response that does not depend on experience
  3. self-preservation—a reaction for the purpose of escaping life-threatening danger

Salmon in the northern Pacific Ocean migrate. Young salmon swim out to sea from the freshwater tributaries of the Yukon River where they are born. After they have become adults, they migrate, or travel, about 2,000 miles back up the Yukon to their birthplaces. There they mate, lay eggs, and die.

Which of the following statements is supported by the passage above?
Need a Hint?
A)Salmon migration behavior is a reflex behavior.
B)Salmon migration behavior is learned from parents.
C)Salmon migration is a self-preservation behavior.
D)Salmon migration behavior is instinct.
E)Salmon migration behavior is communicative.

A food chain is a cycle of the transfer of energy in food. In the food chain in the diagram, the grasshopper is an herbivore that eats grass and other forms of plant life. The frog, snake, and hawk eat other animals. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi feed on animal waste and dead plants and animals. As the dead organisms decompose, the energy and nutrients they contained are released into the environment and are used again by plants.

A change in the feeding habits of one population can affect other populations in its food chain. For example, if a population of tree beetles that feed on leaves increases, the tree population experiences damaged leaves. At the same time, the population of birds that feed on the beetles benefits from the increased food supply.

Which of the following conclusions is supported by the above information?
Need a Hint?
A)A severe drought would have no effect on decomposers.
B)If the grasshopper populations decreased, the frog population would increase.
C)Decomposers benefit plants but harm plant eaters.
D)If a long-lasting chemical pesticide is eaten by a frog, the pesticide could eventually harm an hawk.
E)Herbivores are not a necessary part of the food chain.
