Poetry

Chapter Overview

Poetry is different from fiction, nonfiction, and drama. It is written in lines and groups of lines called stanzas and uses fewer words to express its meaning, emotion, and description than other genres. Poetry also uses figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and personification.

This chapter includes sections that explain
  • the characteristics of poetry
  • figurative language
  • the subjects of poetry

It also provides suggestions for reading and for understanding the language of poetry.
