Internet Exercises

1. Find Movie Listings

The Internet may be worldwide, but one of its best applications is local information. Local media have cooperated with web information services. For example, you can get local movie listings in almost any market. Find the movie listings for a theater near you. Web portals (Excite and Yahoo) can help, and so can Moviefone.com.

Bookmark this location for the next exercise.

2. Watch a Movie Trailer

Now that you have the movie schedule, you need to pick the movie. The best way is to look at reviews or trailers. Pick a movie in local theaters and find reviews for that movie online. If possible, view the trailer (preview) for the movie online as well.

3. Online Films

In addition to promoting movie theaters, the Internet is being used to distribute whole films. Watch at least 30 minutes (total) of online films. If possible, select films from more than one web site. Consider films from Atom.com, Ifilm.com, and Broadcast.com. Would these films be successful on broadcast television? Would you watch film this way? Why?

4. Studios Online

Movie studios have begun to integrate their marketing and web content. Find and visit the online homes for a major film distributor like Sony, Disney, or Warner Brothers. Spend at least 30 minutes considering the promotion of two or three films. How are they using the Internet? How do they make their site more than just an advertisement?
