Joelle teaches in a school district that serves many Latino students. She had previously taught in a White middle-class school district. She has discovered that many of her students are having difficulty with their schoolwork, and Joelle wonders if her teaching style might have something to do with it. Do Latino students have a different learning style from Euro-American students? How can teachers adapt their lessons to this population?

Tae is the only Asian-American student in his class. His teacher, Mr. Mantenga, does not have much experience working with Asian-American students. He is under the impression that Tae is very gifted, particularly in math and in the sciences. Mr. Mantenga tries to challenge Tae with more difficult work. Is Mr. Mantenga helping Tae, or might he be basing his impressions of Tae on stereotypes? What would be helpful for Mr. Mantenga to know about Asian-American children?
