Read the following scenario, think about your various options, and decide what you would do in this situation. Consider all possible outcomes, and what you may stand to gain or lose as a result of your decision. Write an essay in which you essay why you chose this particular course of action.

1

You have been a correctional officer at Central State Prison for six months. This is your first job since you graduated from college, and since you have chosen corrections as a career, you want to get off to a good start. You realize that with your education you have a good shot at moving up the ranks quickly. Your supervisor, SGT Ross, has commented several times that you are a quick learner and that he is impressed with your work. You just received your first personnel evaluation, and your scores were good enough to get you noticed by the warden.

While on duty one evening in C Cellhouse, you overhear loud voices coming from the TV room. Thinking that there may be a problem, you head in that direction. Just as you walk through the door, you observe inmate Jones land a fist to the nose of inmate Wilson; Wilson appears to be "out" when he hits the floor. You go ahead and enter the room and say, "Hey, what's going on here?" Just then you notice SGT Ross standing in the corner of the room with his arms folded across his chest, grinning.

"No problem," Ross says, "these guys were just settling a little disagreement." Wilson seems to have regained his senses, but is still on the floor moaning in obvious pain. SGT Ross continues, "Jones here was getting a little tired of Wilson trying to force him into the White Arian Rangers."

You know that the White Arian Rangers is the most feared white gang in the prison, and that WARs are suspected of several inmate murders. Wilson is believed to be a top "officer" in the White Arian Rangers. You also know that Jones has a clean record. He is a quiet inmate who is doing time for robbery. He is generally respectful of correctional staff and tends to avoid trouble-making inmates.

"Let's go," says SGT Ross, "we need to get ready for the 8:00 PM count."

Prison policy requires that a written incident report be filed in this situation so you say to SGT Ross: "You want to do the report, or do you want me to do it?"

"What report?" he replies, with a smile. "What incident? I didn't see anything, did you?"
