Complete the Situational Leadership Case Study: Lorne Michaels, Executive Producer of Saturday Night Live

Discussion Hersey and Blanchard define the situational perspective on leadership as having four styles: telling, selling, participating and delegating. The telling style emphasizes task, while the selling style emphasizes both task and relationships. The participating style emphasizes relationships, while the delegating style focuses very little on either the task or relationships dimensions of the group.

Readiness refers to the ability of the group, their motivation and their experience level with the task at hand. A competent leader adjusts styles to fit the readiness level of the group. Given that people's abilities, motivation and experience do not remain static, the competent leader is continually making adjustments to fit the readiness of each member. Sometimes this is easier said than done.
