About the Authors

Paul Kelter is M. F. Rourk Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. Professor Kelter received his B.S. in Chemistry from the City College of the City University of New York, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL), where his research mentor was Jim Carr, the second author of this book! Dr. Kelter has been honored with many teaching awards, including the 1990 University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh Distinguished Teaching Award, the University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (1999), and his personal favorites, the inaugural and second University of Nebraska Student Body Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards (1996 and 1997). Dr. Kelter is a lifetime member of the University of Nebraska Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

James D. Carr is Professor of Chemistry and Coordinator of the general chemistry program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry at Iowa State University in 1960 and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Purdue University in 1965. He did postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina in 1965-66, after which he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nebraska. He was awarded a University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1981, the University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award in 1996, and the Distinguished Teaching Award sponsored by the Nebraska Teaching Improvement Council in 2001. Additionally, he has been recognized five times by the University of Nebraska Parents Association for Services to Students. During 1999, while in York, England, he participated in curricular revisions on pre-university chemistry in the United Kingdom.

Andrew Scott is a writer and lecturer. He received a B.Sc. in biochemistry from Edinburgh University, Scotland, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Cambridge University, England. His books have been translated into many languages and he has written for a wide variety of newspapers and magazines. He has taught chemistry and general science for several universities and colleges.
