Communication and Perception: I am More Than a Camera

Exercise 1 Subject: Redefining gender-specific activities

There has been a surge in the popularity of women's sports in the United States, recently. Among these noteworthy sports is women's boxing. Please go and visit the official site of the women's boxing archive network (www.womenboxing.com) and browse their information.

What do you think of sporting activities that seek to redefine gender stereotypes? Do you personally find women's boxing appealing? Explain your answer.

Exercise 2: Subject: Examining technology and perception

If you have an IBM-based PC, take your web-browser to www.worlds.com. There, you will find a site that supports a downloadable program, which will allow you to access their interactive virtual reality world. If you have a fast enough connection, and also use a microphone, you will be able to hold voice-chat conversations with people from all around the world.

After experimenting with the Worlds.com player, how has your perception of reality been virtually altered? Or has it been altered at all?

Exercise 3: Subject: Paper newspapers v. online newspapers

Compare your local "paper newspaper" and "online newspaper." To complete this exercise, obtain a copy of your local daily newspaper. Read it as fully as you like, making sure to cover the chief stories on each section's front page. Once you have completed this, go to that newspaper's website.

Make sure that the newspaper you are reading has an accompanying online version of their paper. Check with the American Journalism Review (ajr.newslink.org/news.html) to see if your local daily is available online.

Assume that two readers each encountered a different newspaper format, the paper or the online version. Would technology affect their perceptions of how information was being processed? Explain your answer.
