The Power Of Computer Brainpower

Glossary

Artificial intelligence (AI)    is the science of making machines imitate human thinking and behavior.
Buyer agent or shopping bot    are intelligent agents that look on the Web for the product of your choice and bring the information back to you.
Data mart    is a miniature data warehouse with a special focus.
Data mining    is the process of extracting information from a data warehouse for decision-making purposes.
Data-mining bots    search through data warehouses to discover new information.
Data warehouse    is a collection of information from internal and/or external sources organized specifically for decision-making purposes.
Decision support system (DSS)    is software that uses models, information, and an interactive user interface to help you make decisions.
Expert system, also called a knowledge-based system    is an artificial intelligence system that applies reasoning capabilities to reach a conclusion.
Find-and-retrieve agents    travel around a network (very likely the Internet) finding information and bringing it back to you.
Fuzzy logic    is a mathematical method of handling imprecise or subjective information.
Genetic algorithm    is an artificial intelligence system that mimics the evolutionary, survival-of-the-fittest process, to generate increasingly better solutions to a problem.
Geographic information system (GIS)    is software that allows you to see information in map form.
Global positioning system (GPS)    is a device that tells you your current latitude, longitude, speed, and direction of movement.
Intelligent agent or bot    is software that will automatically perform repetitive tasks on your computer for you.
Model management    is the component of a decision support system that handles the models.
Monitoring and surveillance agents    are intelligent agents that perform diagnostic and housekeeping in the background, alerting you when they find something of interest.
Neural network    is an artificial intelligence system that is capable of learning how to differentiate patterns.
Robot    is an artificial intelligence device with simulated human senses capable of taking action on its own.
Structured decision    is one that you can make by applying a formula. With a structured decision you punch in the right numbers, do the arithmetic correctly, and get the right answer - guaranteed.
Unstructured decision    is one for which there is no guaranteed way to get a precise right answer.
User agents    are intelligent agents that help an individual in performing computer-related tasks.
User interface    is the manner in which you communicate with the software package.
