Anti-virus software    is utility software that scans for and often eliminates viruses in your RAM and on your storage devices.
Application software    is the software that allows you to perform specific tasks such as writing a term paper, surfing the Web, keeping a home budget, and creating slides for a presentation.
Communications software    is software that helps you communicate with other people through the use of your computer.
Crash proof software    is utility software that helps you save information if your system crashes and you're forced to turn it off and then back on again.
Desktop publishing software    extends word processing by including design and formatting techniques to enhance the layout and appearance of a document.
Device letter    is a unique identifier for each different storage device on your computer.
Digital camera    is an input device that helps you capture live photos or pictures and transfer them directly to your computer.
Digital video camera    is an input device that helps you capture live video and transfer them directly to your computer.
Directory    is a list of the files on a particular storage device.
Disk optimization software    is utility software that organizes your information on your hard disk in the most efficient way.
File    is a collection of information you need to effectively use your computer.
File manager utility software    is utility software that helps you manage, organize, find, copy, move, rename, and delete files on your computer.
Filename    is a unique name that you give to a file of information.
Filename extension    (most often just called an extension) further identifies the contents of your file usually by specifying the file type.
Folder    (which your operating system will display as a manila folder icon) is a special portion of your root directory into which you can place files that have similar information.
Freeware    is software that is also public domain software, meaning you can use it as you wish free of charge.
Graphics software    helps you create and edit photos and art.
Linux    is an open-source operating system that provides a rich operating environment for high-end workstations and network servers.
Mac OS    is the operating system for today's Apple computers.
Microphone    is an input device that captures live sounds such as your voice or perhaps a dog barking.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Millennium    (Windows 2000 Me) is an operating system for a home computer user with utilities for setting up a home network and performing video, photo, and music editing and cataloging.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional    (Windows 2000 Pro) is an operating system for people who have a personal computer connected to a network of other computers at work or at school.
Microsoft Windows XP Home    (Windows XP Home) is Microsoft's home computer user operating system.
Microsoft Windows XP Professional    (Windows XP Pro) is Microsoft's recommendation for people who have a personal computer connected to a network of others computers at work or at school.
Multimedia    is a presentation of information which can include sound, text, graphics, video, and animation and over which you have some sort of control.
Multimedia authoring software    is software that you use to build your multimedia application.
Multitasking    is an operating system function that allows you to work with more than one piece of software at a time.
Online banking    is the use of your computer system to interact with your bank electronically, including writing checks, transferring funds, and obtaining a list of your account transactions.
Operating system software    is system software that controls your application software and manages how your hardware devices work together.
Pathname    is the device letter, folder, sub-folder (if present), filename, and extension that describes a particular file and its location.
Personal finance software    offers you the capabilities of maintaining your checkbook, preparing a budget, tracking investments, monitoring your credit card balances, and perhaps even paying bills electronically.
Personal information management (PIM)    software helps you create and maintain (1) to-do lists, (2) appointments and calendars, and (3) points of contact.
Personal productivity software    helps you with personal tasks that you can probably perform even if you don't own a computer.
Presentation software    helps you create and edit information that will appear in electronic slides.
Public domain software    is software that you can copy, distribute, and even modify without obtaining permission.
Scanner    is an input device that helps you copy or capture images, photos, and art work that exist on paper.
Shareware    is software that you can "test drive" or "try before you buy."
Shrink-wrap license    is a document that is shrink-wrapped to the outside of the software box.
Software license    defines the way in which you can use the software.
Software suites    are "bundles" of related software packages that are sold together.
software version    (version) tells you which iteration of the software you're using.
Spreadsheet software    helps you work primarily with numbers, including performing calculations and creating graphs.
System software    is the software that details how your computer carries out technology-specific tasks.
Uninstaller software    is utility software that you can use to remove software from your hard disk you no longer want.
Utility software    is software that provides additional functionality to your operating system.
Web authoring software    helps you design and develop Web sites and pages that you publish on the Web.
Word processing software    helps you create papers, letters, memos, and other basic documents.
