QUESTIONS TO SHARPEN YOUR FOCUS

1		Based upon what you've recently learned about Afghanistan, is that culture individualistic or collectivistic? Does that society have a large or small power distance? What clues do you have?
2		Do you see yourself as having more of an independent or an interdependent self? Does this go with the flow of your culture, or are you swimming upstream?
3		Both Ting-Toomey and Gudykunst say that mindfulness is necessary for effective intercultural communication. How does their use of the term differ? Is it a difference that makes a difference?
4		What style of conflict management would you use with the group member who did poor work? Do you think that your response is based on your culture, self-construal, sex, or status? What other factors affect your decision?
