9.1 Teaching

Pierre van Hiele, and Dieke van Hiele-Geldof were teachers in the Netherlands who developed a theory about how students learn geometry. Research on the teaching and learning of geometry has supported the "van Hiele theory" - that students learn geometry by progressing through five stages or levels of reasoning. Find information about the van Hiele levels of reasoning in geometry and describe each level and how the levels differ.

9.1 Concepts

Write a short paper about the Greek mathematician Euclid. What is known about his life and why was his work on geometry so important? What are some other important ideas he contributed to the field of mathematics?

9.1 Concepts

In section 9.1 of the text, paper folding was used to illustrate types of angles and certain geometric shapes. Starting with those ideas see how many different angles with whole number measures you can obtain by paper folding. List the measures of the different angles, show/describe how you formed the angles, and explain how you arrived at each measure.
