A. B Copy

     B copy consists mostly of background culled from the files. When newspapers expect an event to occur, such as the death of a prominent person who is critically ill, B copy will be prepared ahead of time so that, should the event occur close to deadline, the story can be used quickly with only the addition of the lead. Prepare B copy for one of the following situations:

  1. The death of the president of your college or university.
  2. The confirmation of the attorney general of the state as a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
  3. The retirement of the senior U.S. senator for health reasons, to be formally announced in Washington in two days.
  4. The appointment of the chairman of the board of Du Pont Co., of Delaware, as distinguished professor for one year at your college or university.

B. Degrees

     The following figures represent the percentages of racial and ethnic groups that hold bachelor's degrees or higher:

     Conduct interviews with educational authorities and consult appropriate references for an article that explains the wide variations in these figures.

C. Periodicals

     Select a subject area from the following subject list: business, computers, home construction and repair, journalism, music, psychology, religion, international affairs. Gather from library resources the titles of five major periodicals that specialize in the subject.

D. Commentary

     Select an article from one of the library's publications on journalism or current events and summarize the article in 250 words. Then comment on the article in 250 words.
