B. Shortage   Because American college students aren't studying engineering or the physical sciences, U.S. firms are increasingly reliant on foreign workers. The jobs in these fields filled by foreign workers went from 14 percent to 22 percent in the past decade.   At the doctoral level, the increase in foreign students was significant—from 24 percent to 38 percent. To attract U.S. students, the National Science Board recommends federal subsidies in the two fields.   Track the enrollment of foreign students in these fields at your university. Also, find out how many graduate assistants are foreign today compared to 15 years ago. |
