Mike Roemer
Athlete or outbacker—the reporter cultivates all sorts of sources

Introduction

A time-honored journalism adage states: A reporter can be no better than his or her sources.
Reporters depend on their sources for background, tips and corroborating information. The reporter looks for the best-qualified human sources. Reporters have techniques for testing their sources' reliability, and when a source fails the test, that source is dropped.
The journalist also uses a variety of physical sources that include records and documents. An understanding of how systems work points the reporter to useful physical sources.
