     The Library of Congress
No! No! No! to the Suffragettes

Organized resistance to the woman's vote was common throughout the country.
The right to vote is considered one of the foundations of a democracy. Yet, this right was given only to white male property owners by most states after the American Revolution. There was nothing in the Constitution that guaranteed women this right, and this disenfranchisement spurred a long period of activism by women.
Some states did extend the right to women who owned property, but despite the work of women like Susan B. Anthony and others, the resistance was powerful well into the 20th century.
When Carrie Chapman Catt became president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1900 for four years and then again in 1915, she reorganized it and emphasized work in the states to influence state legislatures to adopt women's suffrage, a tactic that moved from state to state with success.
Finally, in August 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify a suffrage amendment to the Constitution, and the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted. Catt had persuaded the Tennessee legislature to act.
Find out your state's action, or inaction, on women's suffrage and prepare a broadcast or magazine feature that tells the story. Use as a peg some date in the history and aim your story's use at the anniversary of that date.
