A. Dating Violence

One of five college women reports having been the victim of abuse at least once, according to the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence. Drinking and drug use contribute up to 60 percent of the incidents, the organization says. The violence ranges from homicide to assault. Many of the victims continue an abusive relationship because they prefer it to being alone, or they are so inexperienced in relationships that they accept a violent one as normal, says the Alliance. The U.S. Justice Department has allocated $8.1 million to 21 colleges to study violence against women and to initiate programs on the campus.
What is the situation on your campus? Interview men and women about incidents they may have been involved in or have witnessed. What has been the result of some abusive relationships? In many states, dating relationship violence is not covered by domestic violence laws.
