Each year, about 400,000 unwed teenage women have children. Most decide to raise the children themselves. Not all the experts on child care find this best for the infant. They say many such children are raised in poverty by inexperienced and immature mothers.
Others say that such families show signs of strength because the mothers usually have refused to marry the fathers. These marriages, the young mothers say, would have little chance of success.
Gather background information on the subject. Blend with interviews of campus and local authorities for an article for the Sunday magazine on what is best for single mothers and their children.
