A. Wages

The janitors, kitchen workers, security guards, yard workers are the lowest-paid employees on the campus, paid from $7 to $11 an hour. Their annual earnings usually put them at or beneath the poverty level if they are supporting a family. Find out what these workers are paid on your campus and how they manage to cope with the cost of living. Has anything been done on their behalf? (Some students have formed committees to speak for these workers.)

B. Country Music

"What often passes for country now, particularly on radio stations playing that tightly controlled format, is a bland blend of tried-and-true formulas, with every edge smoothed by waves of hit-making experience. It has strayed from its hillbilly and country-and-western roots. It's all generic style, with no character or substances," says Anthony DeCurtis, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine. He praises Johnny Cash, George Jones, Willie Nelson, and he says that Dolly Parton, Delbert McClinton and Rodney Crowell have returned to "country's roots." Others, he concludes, have cut themselves "free from that source, the heart of the heart of country" and thus "the music has insured its own irrelevance."
What country musicians are students listening to these days? What do they think of this assessment of country music?
